Threatening processes

‘Biodiversity is under serious threat as a result of human activities. The main dangers worldwide are population growth and resource consumption, climate change and global warming, habitat conversion and urbanisation, invasive alien species, over-exploitation of natural resources and environmental degradation.’

Convention on Biological Diversity (1992)1

Many rocky outcrops are steep and inaccessible, and by virtue of their insularity and isolation, represent some of the last wild places on Earth. However, even relatively large rocky outcrops, and those in protected areas, are at risk from threatening processes such as altered fire regimes, water and air pollution and recreational activities. In commodity production landscapes, these outcrops are exposed to a broader range of disturbances associated with forestry, farming and mineral extraction industries. In this chapter, we discuss the main threats to rocky outcrop ecosystems in Australia.
